National College of Ireland announces campus expansion

National College of Ireland (NCI) is a not-for-profit, independent, higher education institute based in the IFSC. Growing from a workers’ college in the 1950s to 6,500 students today, the College provides full-time and part-time programmes from undergraduate to doctoral level, in business, computing, education and psychology. NCI is home to the Early Learning Initiative (ELI), which works in partnership with local communities to support educational journeys and achievements.

NCI has grown significantly, in recent years, and has been seeking a suitable premises for campus expansion. Today the College can confirm that NCI has purchased West Wing, Block R, Spencer Dock which will allow the College to continue and enhance its mission to ‘change lives through education’, and to expand its Early Learning Initiative services to the local community.

The new building is less than a 5-minute walk from the current campus at Mayor Square, where the College has served for 20 years as an intersection between education, business, and community, and will add 5,600 square metres to NCI’s holding in the North East Inner City (NEIC). Classes could commence in the new building as early as January, with the new campus fully operational by September 2023.

Gina Quin, President of NCI, commented: “I am delighted to announce our campus expansion, which has long been in the planning and is a long-term investment. The timing is perfect: the acquisition of this new building will allow us to grow in line with the six key priorities of our five-year strategic plan, which we will launch this semester.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to deliver for our students, who will benefit from enhanced facilities; our staff, providing better working environments for all our activities; our teaching, through better classrooms and study spaces; our research, through expansion of our library footprint; and more access paths into education at an enhanced college campus. It will also allow NCI to focus on its unique positioning as a distinctive education provider in Higher Education.

“We cannot wait to make this new space our own, extending the warmth and welcome of the NCI into Spencer Dock, in a move that will have a positive impact on the whole of the NEIC community.”
