Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
1% for the Planet is a global network of businesses, individuals, and nonprofits tackling the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges and leveraging the power of philanthropy to drive strategic impact. The core of our model is business membership, in which businesses commit 1% of annual revenues to our vetted environmental partners.

How are you different?
We are different in that we represent a collective global solution model activated through custom cross-sector partnerships. Moreover, we implement an annual certification of these giving partnerships, so our model delivers credibility for all stakeholders, including consumers looking for brands they can trust. (Look for our logo to support brands that give back!)
Why will you do well?
We create a way in which real scalable impact is delivered such that our members can access the benefits of brand credibility through our logo coupled with brand differentiation through custom-giving partnerships. These features add up to real business value in a customer marketplace where the data shows that:
85% of consumers trust independent, third-party certification organizations to verify product claims;
93% of Gen Zers say if a company makes a commitment, it should have the appropriate programs and policies in place to back up that commitment; and
85% of purpose-driven companies showed positive growth; in comparison, 42% of non-purpose-led companies showed a drop in revenue in the same annual study.
1% for the Planet membership can also boost employee engagement and retention. 1% for the Planet Business Member, Union wine reported in a recent HR company-wide survey over 90% of their employees felt it was important for their company to support environmental non-profits.
Where are you based?
Our Global headquarters is located in Burlington, Vermont, USA. We operate as a remote/hybrid organization, with about half of our staff located in Vermont and working out of our headquarters office several days a week while the other half work in remote locations around the United States. We have a licensed chapter based in and serving membership in France, and in the coming years, we will be adding on-the-ground staff in select international locations, reporting to Global Headquarters.
When was the company launched?
1% for the Planet was launched in 2002. Our founders are Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. We were founded to build a movement of companies for whom giving back is not simple year-end philanthropy but rather core to their strategic purpose and operations. We have steadily built this growing community, with 5,500 business members who have donated close to $450M USD over the lifetime of 1% for the Planet.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
Our biggest wins include the following:
We have accelerated the growth of our impact with each passing year, growing to annual certified giving of $65M in 2022.
We have launched an innovation in environmental philanthropy, the Planet Impact Fund, to accelerate our impact.
Who are you trying to attract to your product?
We are primarily focused on attracting businesses to our membership model. Additionally, we seek to engage individuals in our community through donations to support our work and through donations to the Planet Impact Fund. Overall, we seek to attract and deliver value to all stakeholders in our community: business members, individuals as donors and also as consumers of our member brands, and the environmental partners who play the most critical role in implementing impact on the ground.
What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?
Get clear on your particular strategy and purpose, stay focused on that, and then build in adaptability to respond to an external environment that will consistently throw curveballs. Pay attention to culture and change management – organizational health is fundamental to attaining strategy and vision. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed, step back and consider what is currently complex that could be made simple – in most cases, simple (not to be confused with simplistic) is going to enable you to go the distance.
Tell us about your team?
Our team is amazing! We grew to 41 this year, representing close to 46% growth in one year. We invest a lot in supporting our team and coming together around our core values, which are very much alive for each and all of us. Our core values are:
Unleash passion every day
Grow stronger together
Think big, act now
What are your plans for the future?
We are committed to growing impact at an accelerating rate through both our membership model and our Planet Impact Fund. We will support this growth with a continued commitment to excellent operations and continual learning and improvement across our functional areas.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
A magic wand to solve the environmental crisis!
A data-driven business member & environmental partner matchmaking tool. It could start as a quiz taken by each member of our network. Businesses would detail what type of giving they were looking to do, and environmental partners would detail the support they need. Then, an algorithm would form partnerships based on values, location and any other key attributes. Of course, our team will always be able to support our network in partnership advising, but this type of tech would allow businesses and environmental partners to find each other independently!
An impact calculator to precisely measure our collective efforts in real-time (e.g. trees planted, miles of shoreline cleaned, people-provided meals).
An eligibility calculator to easily help prospects audit their existing environmental giving in relation to the annual 1% commitment amount (1% of their annual sales).
Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?
We want to underscore our commitment to keeping intersectionality at the heart of our model. The fact is, marginalized communities around the globe are feeling the impacts of the environmental crisis more than anyone else.
That’s why we’re expanding a more just definition of environmental, in which people and the planet are integrated, and forging powerful partnerships that address justice issues. Without justice, environmental action will always fall short of making lasting change.
